Smart Coffee Mug Storage Ideas for Small Kitchens
1. Audit your mug collection
As painful as it is for me to suggest this, one of the best storage ideas is to always declutter. In this case, that means going through your coffee mug collection and figuring out which ones you should get rid of. Everyone has those mugs that you don’t use in the back of one of your cabinets.
As a fellow coffee mug lover myself, I force myself to do this at least once a year. And if you truly can’t get rid of mugs, find another storage space that’s not in your kitchen to store them.
2. Make your favorite mugs the most accessible
Another easy tip to make your coffee storage work for you is by keeping your most used mugs in the most accessible places. If you use something often, then you want it to be where you need it, right? Your favorite mugs should always be the easiest ones to grab, regardless of where they’re stored.
3. Stack your mugs
Let’s start with a super simple tip. The best way to fit as many mugs as possible in whatever space you may have dedicated to it, is to stack them. But we don’t want you just stacking a mug on top of a mug. You need some kind of barrier in between them or you will end up with scratches or even chips in your coffee mugs.
That’s where we suggest that you use shelf liners. Shelf liners can be placed both under and in between your mugs. It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing way to stack your mugs, but you will thank me later.
4. Use a saucer plate to stack
If you want or need to stack your mugs, but also want it to look aesthetic, you might have to spring for mugs with saucer plates. These are typically more common if you buy your mugs in sets, or if you like to drink tea as tea cups tend to lend themselves to having saucer plates. Instead of cutting out shelf liners for each individual coffee mug, you can just use the saucer plate to neatly stack your mugs on top of each other.
5. Buy a coffee mug tree holder
One of the cutest options for storing your mugs is by displaying them out in the open. There are plenty of options to do so, but one of the most popular is the tree holder. It’s a great option for someone who wants their coffee corner to look more aesthetic, but the downside is that it probably won’t hold all of your mugs.
If anything, you would probably use this to either hold your daily mugs or use it as a piece of decor. And when I say use this as a piece of decor, it means mugs that you probably won’t even use, but look nice to display. It’s kind of like the way you have decorative hand towels that you don’t use in the bathroom.
6. Use pegboards
Pegboards are a great way to organize and display your coffee mugs without using extra counter space, which is important when you have a smaller kitchen. When you think of pegboards, you might think of the kind that people keep in their office spaces.
And, yes, that is technically one type of pegboard, but for hanging your coffee mugs, there are more options. There are the traditional wooden or metal pegboards, which are similar to those used in offices, the popular IKEA Skadis series, and custom designed ones you can check out on places like Etsy.
7. Grab some hooks
If you don’t have a lot of wall space that you can use for the pegboard option above, hooks are your next best option. You can store your coffee mugs without utilizing too much counter space in your kitchen by using hooks that can be affixed to the bottom of a cabinet, a rack that slides nicely in the cabinet above, or even Command strips with hooks.
Your decision may be dependent on what you can actually do to your space. For example, we would recommend that renters go with a rack that doesn’t require any drilling or the Command strips, as long as you follow the instructions on removing them and you aren’t using super heavy mugs.
8. Put shelf risers
If you need to keep your mugs in your cabinets, but don’t want to stack them like previously discussed in this post, you can always buy small shelf risers instead. This is a great option when you have a very eclectic coffee mug collection (like myself). You can easily stack your coffee mugs without worrying about the different sizes that may impact stacking them cleanly.
9. Use a corner shelf
Although we try to avoid using counter space, if you don’t know what to do with that one corner you have, then we have the perfect idea for you. Grabbing a small organizer that fits into the corner of your counter top is a great option to store your mugs. There are plenty of different sizes that you can work with depending on the width and height of your corner space. There are also adjustable types as well, if that’s something that you need.
