Genius Storage Organization Ideas
Bedroom Storage
1. Under the bed storage
This is for those who aren’t lucky enough to have built-in storage already. This is the perfect spot to put anything that you can’t hang in an aesthetic way or hide anywhere else. It doesn’t matter that others aren’t coming into your bedroom because your bedroom should be a peaceful, relaxing space in your home that isn’t overwhelmed by clutter. And if you don’t have enough space to fit any of the boxes that are made specially to fit under the bed, then go buy some bed risers! Try to take advantage of this space because your bed often takes up a large area of your bedroom.
2. Storage bench
This option is perfect for those who, again, don’t have that built-in storage capacity at the end of their bed. A storage bench at the end of your bed is also another great example of functional decor. Just because you need it for storage doesn’t mean it needs to be ugly. There are plenty of super cute options at your local home goods store that you can easily pick up. If that is not in your budget, you can also take to Amazon to get a cheaper version that I linked below:
3. Over the door storage
When you’re looking for extra storage space, you need to utilize what’s available to you, including your own door! You can easily buy over the door storage anywhere, especially for a cheaper price online. These are perfect for purses, backpacks, gym bags, etc. I always love this idea because you can also use this as a place to sit anything you might forget before walking out the door. One of my hacks when I always forget something before work was to hang it on the door, and with over the door storage, you can easily do that!
Kitchen Storage
4. Hang everything you can
This is one of the best ideas for kitchen storage. Why shove it in a drawer or cabinet when you can hang it? And when you’re looking for places to hang things, you could utilize anywhere: walls, the inside and sides of cabinets, and even the side of the refrigerator. Typically, they’re your big pots and pans or your favorite coffee mugs, or even a personalized cutting board!
5. Magnet board for knives and other utensils
This is a quick and easy fix as well. By using a magnet board to hang your knives, you can get rid of that heavy, wooden block that they’re most likely sitting in. Although, I wouldn’t recommend this if you don’t have a good enough space to keep it above a counter space. Please don’t put this on a random wall, especially if you have rambunctious pets or little children. Below I have linked a cheaper, decent option for a magnet board.
6. Drawer dividers and organizers
You would be surprised at how much extra space you can create in a drawer or a cabinet once you add either a divider or an organizer. I would start adding dividers to any cutlery drawers and organizers to any large cabinets. Remember to try to utilize the backs of the cabinet drawers as well. I would recommend acrylic dividers and organizers, like the ones below, instead because they are easier to clean.
7. Shelf risers in cabinets
This is another great option for your kitchen cabinets to create more room. Acrylic shelf risers can be helpful to create almost a second shelf or even third shelf in your cabinet while allowing you the visibility to see everything you have.
Bathroom Storage
8. Wire or woven baskets
There’s no rule against making your storage cute, especially in your bathroom! If you don’t have a linen closet, don’t worry. Get some cute wire or woven baskets to use for any storage. These are great for storing almost anything that you would need in your bathroom. From your clean towels and washcloths to extra toilet paper, adding some functional decor like this is the best way to create storage in your space without it feeling bulky or overwhelming.
9. A tray
A tray is another piece of functional decor that instantly upgrades your bathroom while serving as “storage” for items that you need in your bathroom, but don’t necessarily have to put away. Who said that storage means it’s completely hidden? A tray makes your sink look clean and organized while creating a perfect space for you to add a small plant or candle, if you want. If you don’t have room for a tray next to your sink, you could also put it on the back of your toilet as well (an ideal place to keep extra toilet paper). Below is a stunning silver tray you can try.
10. Mirror storage
Almost every bathroom should have a mirror, and if you have the space for one, then you have the opportunity for even more storage space. You can easily find a mirror that opens up, allowing you to store small, essential items, such as medications, floss, toothpaste, and more. Again, this is another piece of functional decor that will help you maximize the storage in your bathroom without throwing anything away.
Basement Storage
11. Large shelving units
Do you know those large shelving units on wheels? Those are the perfect pieces to use for your basement. They are the best option for several reasons, and you can easily pick them up at your local Costco or even order it online. They are sturdy, fit a lot of containers, and are easily moved because of the wheels on the bottom. You could try installing wire framed shelves that adhere to the wall, but the convenience of the shelving units being easily moved is absolutely worth the larger price point.
12. Storage bins
Now that we have the shelving units in your basement, you need storage bins to put on these shelves. It doesn’t really matter the size of the storage bins, but it would definitely be helpful if you measured out both your shelving units before buying your bins to make sure you can maximize your space. Additionally, you should opt for clear bins if you can because it will make it easier to see what you put in the bins. The plastic ones can be more expensive than cloth bins, but they are definitely worth it!
13. Organize by category
When you’re putting your items in your bins, you need to make sure that you aren’t just adding a huge mix of items that you want to keep in your basement. For example, you need to ensure that all your different holiday decorations are in different containers. Trust me, you will be a lot happier if you’re not sorting through Easter eggs and bunnies during Christmas time when you’re actually looking for the stockings.
14. Keep heavy items lower
While you’re adding your bins to these shelving units, please make sure that you’re keeping your heavier bins and items closer to the ground. You would think it might be common sense, but sometimes people don’t feel like rearranging their bins once they’ve introduced a heavier bin. You do not want to pull something heavy off the top shelf and have it hit you in the face.
Closet Storage
15. Acrylic shelf dividers
Typically with closet shelves, they’re large and very open. But just because they can appear large doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to maximize the space by adding something to divide it up. Acrylic shelf dividers are perfect for closet shelves because you can see through them and you can adjust their size. Having these will allow you to create more than one stack of clothing in a cleaner way.
16. Baskets
Baskets are another great way to maximize the space of your shelves. You can either get clear or wired baskets, depending on your style. Clear baskets are typically easier to see what item is in your basket while wired baskets tend to be sturdier. Also, I would absolutely measure your closet shelves before buying any so you can get the best fitting baskets possible. You want to make sure you can utilize all of your open space.
17. Vacuum bags
Is there anything in your closet that needs to be in there because there’s no other space, but you don’t use it? Maybe you have a big, puffy coat that you love to wear in the wintertime, but is it currently going to be springtime? That’s a perfect item to go into a vacuum-sealed bag. This will allow you to have so much more space in your closet. They can be a little annoying to use, but the amount of space that they can give back to you is amazing.
Garage Storage
18. Use your vertical space
When it comes to your garage, you need to utilize all the vertical space you have with shelving, hangers, and anything else you can use. This is because you will most likely be using all of the floor space for your other important items such as your trash cans, recycling cans, lawnmower, and maybe even your car. Extra space in your garage is precious and you need to treat it like such.
19. Smaller items need to be in containers
Garages are typically places where smaller items come to get lost. Because it is so incredibly easy for these smaller items to get lost, you need to keep them in specific containers that are nicely labeled so you can find them in the future. Things like nails, smaller tools, and spare keys and parts all fall into this category.
20. Have designated areas
Another way to ensure that you’re not mixing up all your items in your garage is to have designated areas where certain items should be. For example, you can have a tools section in one corner and an outdoors section in another. It doesn’t necessarily have to be perfectly labeled or nicely put together, even just having general designated areas like this can help future you not get incredibly frustrated when they’re looking for something.
21. A space for dirty shoes/clothes/items
Even though you might not have a need for it right now, I promise you that there will come a time that you will need a space for dirty shoes or clothes or even a muddy leash – basically stuff you do not want to take into the house at that moment. Whether your kids come in from a muddy soccer practice or you decided to go for a run and fell epically into the bushes, you will need a “dirty area”.
