Festive & Fun DIY New Year Decorations
1. Mini disco balls
One of the most fun things about New Year’s decor is how sparkly and shiny everything is, especially all of the decor. When looking for decor that fits that theme, mini disco balls are perfect! They’re pretty versatile as you can add them to many different areas as standalone decor or part of a larger piece.
You can place them around your home like you would with any similar decor (think of small pumpkins during the fall) like near your coffee setup or you can use them as part of a table centerpiece. One of the most popular ideas is simply just adding them to a nice, decorative bowl. Whatever you decide, this is definitely a favorite!
2. Garland
When it comes to New Year’s decorations, shiny gold or silver garland is a must-have in your space. This goes perfectly under any doorway or hallway, as well as on any mantel. There are plenty of different options you can go with.
You can go with the typical gold or black tinsel that’s super popular or any of the “Happy New Years” banners. If you want to be a little different, you can get more creative and string together party hats!
3. A countdown clock
If you’ve read other blog posts on this site, then you know how much we love a good piece of functional decor. A DIY countdown clock is such a fun and interactive way to bring in the new year. All you need is some wall space, a brass fastener, construction paper, and 12 balloons.
The construction paper and brass fastener are for creating the hands of the clock, while the balloons are for each hour of the day, depending on when you want to start. Each hour that goes by, you go ahead and pop the previous balloon, leading all the way to midnight.
You can even put something super fun in the midnight balloon like confetti or even candy!
4. Party masks
Party masks are another great example of something that’s not typically used as decor and turn it into a great part of your decorations. You can always use this as part of a larger decor piece, like a table centerpiece.
Another popular way to use party masks as decor is to display them on one of your walls as a kind of wall art for the new year. Choosing different colors and textures can add a layer of depth to your space and instantly upgrade your DIY decor.
5. Your table setup
Even if you’re not necessarily having a sit-down dinner, adding holiday decor to your table is always super fun, especially when it’s for New Year’s. At the base, you can focus on the popular color scheme of gold, silver, and a little bit of black.
Just like we mention in other items on the list, this is a great place to incorporate small little items, from mini clocks and disco balls, and add your favorites, like candles, garland, and bright lighting.
6. Your drink area
Even if you don’t have a bar or even a bar cart in your home, you can still get festive by adding a dedicated drink area or table. And just because New Year’s Eve has become somewhat synonymous with drinking alcohol, it doesn’t mean that you need to have any alcohol at all at your drink area – do what works best for you!
You can drape this area in metallic gold and silver and really dress it up just like you would your main dining table above. You can throw a few bottles of champagne in an ice bucket or deck it out with a cute sign, showing your entire “bar menu”.
If you really wanted to get fancy with it, there’s always the option of a champagne tower! Just remember that sparkling cider with plastic glasses works just as well if you have young kids.
7. Balloons (and more balloons)
Another typical yet popular option is load up on the balloons! When it comes to New Year’s decorations, there’s no such thing as too many balloons. Hiring someone to put up balloon arches can get pretty expensive, but lucky for us there are plenty of DIY balloon arches that you can order online.
And if you want to get more creative with it, a popular idea is buying a big champagne balloon along with a large amount of tan and white balloons. You are going to position the balloons to give it the appearance of you pouring the champagne with the tan and white balloons being the champagne that’s being poured.
8. Your own ball drop
Speaking of balloons, make sure you save some balloons to create your own “ball drop”. In order to do this, you need a sheet, some tape, and whatever decor that you would like to rain down on you, your kids, and any guests that you may have during your New Year’s celebration.
Popular items to include are balloons, confetti, and maybe even some lightweight candies to make it really exciting. You will need to tape or sew your sheet together and make sure you have a string or something that you can easily pull to release at midnight.
9. Use your resolutions
One of the most popular things to do this time of year is come up with a New Year’s resolution. Usually, it’s a goal you want to accomplish or something that you think would improve your overall self. Regardless, of what it is, it’s always easier to stick with it if someone besides yourself is holding you accountable.
For your own DIY decor, you could write down different resolutions on a sheet of paper and use them as decor. Like many other items on this list, you could string them up and use them as a DIY garland or you could add them to a larger piece of decor.
One popular idea is that you can get them ahead of time and use it as their place setting at your table. This is a super fun idea if you’re living with a larger family or if you’re having a New Year’s party.
10. Share your memories
New Year’s is all about welcoming in the new year, but what about the year that just passed us by? Another great New Year’s decor idea is to dedicate an area of your home that celebrates all the good things that happened this year.
From pictures of family and friends to small items or things that remind you of all your favorite memories of the year. This is also another really versatile decor idea, where you can create a cute mantlepiece with this or you can add it to your overall centerpiece.
Regardless, this is such a fun way to celebrate and remind yourself what you’re grateful for in this past year.
11. A gorgeous centerpiece
It wouldn’t be a holiday decor list without the mention of a gorgeous centerpiece. A DIY centerpiece is one of the best pieces of decor because you can get super creative with it and make it personal.
Popular items for New Year’s centerpieces are always a mix of the items above: party hats, tiny disco balls or small bulbs, small clocks, bright lights, and a color scheme of gold, silver, and black.
Feel free to add your own resolutions or memories as well! It doesn’t matter whether this is for your dining room table or your kitchen island as this would work for any place that you have the space to place it.
