This blog post is all about indoor fall decorations.
Cozy Indoor Fall Decorations
1. Pinecones
If you haven’t used pinecones before, then let this be your sign to start. This is such a cute way to incorporate fall into your living room decor. This doesn’t mean you have to go and pick them up from the ground outside, although you absolutely can do that.
Just make sure to put them in a white vinegar and water bath in a 1:1 ratio to clean off extra dirt and bugs, and then pop them in the oven. You can read specifics about it here. Typically, you would add the pinecones to a bowl or basket, whatever fits your decor better.
2. Throw blankets
Nothing says cozy fall decor like a thick throw blanket on your couch. It’s the perfect piece of functional decor for any living room. For fall, a knit or a plush cotton blanket would easily fit into the fall vibe.
If you’re looking to keep with the color scheme of fall, some of the most popular colors include rust, terracotta, taupe, or even a deep olive. These gorgeous colors all almost scream fall. Don’t be afraid of a pattern either, like a nice plaid.
3. Throw pillows
What’s a perfect compliment to a soft cozy throw blanket? It’s some throw pillows, of course! Once you have your throw blanket, the logical next step is to grab some pillows. Or the most logical option is to buy them together so they can go nicely together.
Maybe if you have a plaid throw blanket, you would want to play off of the colors of that piece and add pillows in those specific colors. One of the more popular options is to buy a typical size pillow on Amazon and just change out different pillow covers throughout the year. If you’re looking for a physical texture with fall colors, I would take a look at these adorable Amazon pillow covers.
4. Woven baskets
Another great piece of functional decor for your living room for the fall is a beautiful woven basket. Not only does it bring a nice earthy tone to your space, but it also serves as storage, which we all know that any room can use more of.
You can use it as your catch-all basket with any clutter that you need to keep in your living room but need to hide at times. A perfect example this could be used for are your children’s or pet’s toys. Fold a nice blanket over it and no one would know what you have hiding in it!
5. Trays
Speaking of storage that functions as decor, trays are another great option. To get those fall vibes that you would want in your living room, you should stick with wooden trays. They add a great combination of warmth and earthiness that only comes in the fall.
For example, a dark brown wooden tray would be a perfect option for your space. You can also add in small bits and pieces of fall decor to the tray itself, such as pumpkins, acorns, and a lot of other things that we mention in this blog post.
6. Vases
Vases, jars, or whatever you use in your living room can be easily switched out to add to the overall fall theme. Colors that you should consider are darker oranges, reds, and browns. These will enhance whatever greenery or flowers you choose to add to them. Or if you want to really showcase what you’re displaying, you should opt for a clear container.
7. Plants & flowers
If you don’t want to switch out your vases in your living room, but you want to add a little bit of fall into these areas of your home, think about switching out the plants or flowers that you have. Popular options include dyed wheat grass or easily manageable plants like crotons.
Crotons offer a lot of beautiful colors that you would see in autumn. Whatever you pick, you can easily reuse a clear or white vase that you already have to show off a gorgeous fall-toned plant that you have.
8. Leaves
Speaking plant life, there’s another option that goes perfect with a fall theme. That’s leaves! What else screams that it’s fall other than walking through some crunchy leaves on a crisp day in autumn?
Even though you may not think of them as decor, they are another perfect small piece that you can add to your living room. Whether it be through adding a collection of them to put in a small container or using them as an addition to a larger decor on your mantel, they can add just the fall vibes that you’re looking for.
9. Candles
Whether you’re looking to add some mood lighting or stunning decor to your space for fall, candles are a great option for either. On the lighting side, the flicker of a candle brings a warmth that embodies the feeling of fall.
If you’re looking to upgrade your candles with a specific holder, a popular option is stoneware. It’s typically more expensive, but looks gorgeous. Additionally, if you want some fun scented candles, vanilla, spiced cider, or pumpkin chai are perfect for fall.
10. Rugs
Another option to add some fall vibes to your living room is by adding a nice rug. When looking at colors, of course, you could follow what we said with the blankets and pillows with rust, terracotta, taupe, or even a deep olive, or you could go for a nice plaid or Persian rug. Whatever you choose, something warm and cozy with a soft texture or fall-friendly pattern would be best.
11. Lighting
Honestly, it’s hard to change the lighting in your house, especially if you have little or a lot of windows in your space. But we can do the best we can by adding small additions here and there. For fall, you really want to focus on bringing in some warm lighting to the space. A popular favorite is always by adding candles, either fake or real.
There’s something about that flickering light that has such a calming effect. Additionally, adding some warm lighting could be as easy as changing out some of your lightbulbs. You should focus on bulbs with color temperatures around 2700K-3000K (soft white or warm white).
12. Wreaths
Even though a lot of people think of wreaths as more of Christmas decor, you can absolutely use it as a fall piece as well! The fall color scheme has so many gorgeous colors, it would honestly be a shame not to.
Wreaths would go beautifully hanging on any wall or door that might lead or go towards your living room, or even on your coffee or side table. they don’t have to be hanging anywhere to work. A popular favorite would be a dried floral wreath.
13. Pumpkins
Pumpkins are one of the most fun pieces of fall decor that you could buy, but people don’t realize that there are so many different ways to utilize them. You can buy small pumpkins and add them throughout, placing two or three at a time in certain areas around your living room.
You could use a larger pumpkin and use it as a vase almost with flowers or greenery as well. Pumpkins are so versatile, so don’t be afraid to get creative of how you use them.
14. Books
If you picture your ideal living room, I can bet you would mention something about books. Books are arguably one of the best pieces of functional decor that you could have. There’s something cozy and inviting about having a big couch covered with a thick blanket and pillows with a few books on the table in front of it, begging to be read.
It doesn’t even matter the colors of your book covers because you can buy some neutral ones very easily. Or if you’re not an avid book reader but still love the look, you can buy staging books from sites like Etsy.
15. Mantel decor
Now for one of the most favorite areas to decorate in the living room: the mantel. We chose to put this last because it’s an area where you can incorporate a lot of the earlier elements at once. For example, a combination of leaves, pumpkins, candles, and small wreath would be a perfect mix of some fall favorites that would instantly feel like you just walked into the season.
There are also plenty of gorgeous premade garlands and setups as well at your favorite home goods stores, but feel free to DIY yours to fit your own fall style!
