Easy Tips On How To Organize Your Home
1. Before we start…
Before we even start our decluttering and organization processes, everything tends to go a lot smoother if you’re already prepared. By that, we mean that if you have containers, bins, or even trash bags ready to go, it will make everything easier. It’s not the worst thing in the world if you don’t have any of these, but being ready with these items will make these processes a lot less overwhelming and stressful by being organized from the beginning.
2. Declutter!
You probably knew what the first step in the process was going to be before we even said it, but decluttering is a super important process for organizing your space. Unfortunately, decluttering will take longer than you want it to, but it’s completely worth it. You’ll go either room by room, or section by section, of your home and you will separate it into three different piles: trash it, donate it, or keep it. Remember one good rule, especially for clothes, is if you haven’t used it within a year, it’s safe to either donate it or throw it out.
3. Break it down
One of the most important parts of decluttering is that you need to make it manageable or you will give up. Like previously stated, decluttering can be very overwhelming and stressful. Break your process down. You can go room by room, or even section out each part of each room.
Remember that decluttering doesn’t have to be done in one day or even in one week. The best schedule for you is the one that is most manageable while still getting things done. If that means that you have to also reward yourself with something when you finish a section or a room, do it! You deserve it!
4. Be honest with your keep pile
Your keep pile is when you really need to be honest with yourself. Do you really need everything in those piles? If you absolutely need all those items in your home, the next steps are that you are going to determine whether or not that item should live in that room/section.
To keep organized, you need to find its true place in your home and it needs to stay there. There are certain rooms and sections of homes that tend to accumulate more items than others, such as the entryway or the kitchen. These are two places that you have to be incredibly discerning with where your things should live.
5. If your keep piles are too large…
Honestly, the first time you declutter, your keep piles will absolutely have items that you don’t need or there will be a lot of “maybes”. If you can’t toss items immediately, we recommend that you throw away or put your donation item in a designated basket once a day. A good example are makeup items.
Maybe you have too much of one product but just can’t bear to throw them all away at once. If so, make a daily reminder on your calendar to either throw away or donate one item a day.
For donations, we recommend keeping a bin or container in your home that serves as the “donation box” to easily put your items in on the daily. After it’s done, put a checkmark right by your reminder, and you’ve accomplished your task for the day.
6. Add organization and storage to your entryway
Like previously said above, the entryway in your home can easily become one of the most cluttered, and it’s really understandable as to why. You walk in the door after a long day, and you’re absolutely exhausted. All you want to do is kick off your shoes and drop everything in your hands.
You can still do that, but you can plan for it ahead of time. The better way is to add baskets and bins for keys and mail, hooks for purses and backpacks, even a shoe organizer, to your entryway. Add what you need to keep that area from getting too messy.
7. Add organization and storage to each room
Regardless of whatever room or section you’re thinking of, it could always use a storage or organization item. From your kitchen to your living room, there’s always something that could benefit from being organized. For example, the kitchen could always use small shelves or shelf risers in the kitchen cabinet so your pots and pans aren’t just all in a messy pile.
Another great option is using reusable containers, but remember to store similar items together by category. For example, if you’re in the bathroom, you could store items in a small basket that all have to do with hair. Additionally, try not to overfill the container as well. Nothing is more overwhelming than opening a bin and it’s already falling out of the container.
8. Label your containers
Speaking of containers, another great tip is making sure you label them as well. Even when you keep similar items together, it still doesn’t help you know everything that is in those boxes or containers in the first place. The easiest way to solve this issue is by labeling your containers, especially ones that are deep.
From your living room to your bedroom, take the time to write down exactly what’s in your container. And I’m not just talking about a general topic. You should get specific. The more specific you are, the easier it will be to find something. You will thank yourself later!
9. Make daily items easy to find
While organizing your home, a really important thing to keep in mind is how you use the items that you’re organizing. It’s smart to ensure that whatever items that you use on the daily are the most accessible to you. They need to be the most easily reached items in whatever room or section that you’re working on. Otherwise, you’ll just end up with another mess that you will make going through and trying to find that item.
10. Put it back
Although it’s a simple idea, it might be one of the more difficult tips to follow. Whenever you use an item, whatever it may be, you should try to make it a habit of putting it back in whatever area that you designated for it while you were organizing.
It might feel like it takes way too long or that it’s annoying, but I promise that it will take much shorter than when you’re trying to find that item next. A perfect example are car keys. How many times have you been running late because you tend to drop your car keys anywhere and everywhere once you get home? Put them back!
11. Make a schedule
Whether it’s daily, weekly, or even monthly, make it a part of your schedule to declutter and organize your home if needed. The most important thing is that it needs to work for you and your life. Remember that it’s okay if you test a certain schedule out and it’s not working. Readjust and try a different way until you find what works best for you. Nothing is perfect on the first try.
