Cozy & Cheap Black and Brown Living Room Decor
1. Choose which color will dominate the space
Like with any other color scheme that has at least two colors, it’s best to choose which color is going to be the main color. This makes it so much easier when you’re planning what decor you want. Depending on your vibe, we would suggest that you should stick to brown for larger furniture pieces or decor pieces in your room and then the smaller accents can be black. Too much black can make the room feel a little heavy, but if that’s your vibe then that’s your vibe!
2. Balance the black and brown
This ties nicely with the previous tip of choosing which color should “dominate” your living room space. Even though one will be your main color, one of the most important things to remember is that you still need balance.
Like we stated before, too much black can lead the room to feeling a little heavy, but too much brown may look like you’re sponsored by UPS. And even though your color scheme is black and brown, don’t be afraid to throw in a neutral in there, like a beige rug or a natural wood decor piece. These are great options to instantly warm your space up.
3. Couches
For this post, we’re going to stick with our main, or “dominant”, color being brown with black accents. That will mean that we’re going to look for a brown couch. If you’re looking for quality at a lower price, especially for larger furniture like a couch, you have to stay away from the stores.
The best places to find a quality couch at a cheaper price are estate sales, garage sales, and even Facebook marketplace. Even if they’re not perfect, that’s okay! The important part is searching for something that has “good bones”. If you can find a reupholstering company near you, it still might be cheaper than the thousands of dollars certain companies are asking for today.
If you must get a new couch, wholesale stores such as Costco and Sam’s Clubs usually have good deals on quality furniture. Sam’s Club will be cheap, but Costco’s return policy is amazing. You can absolutely get cheaper furniture at larger stores that I will not name here, but the quality is just not there.
4. Picture frames
Picture frames are always an item that gives people sticker shock. They just can’t believe a picture frame can be that expensive. After you get over the shock, you should first check for any frames that you could reuse, regardless of color.
If you have any, then you can easily use some decor-specific spray paint to get the black that you want. If you don’t have what you need, then you need to purchase them. Finding large, quality frames at a lower price will be difficult, so we suggest that you try similar places that we named above: thrift stores, garage sales, and estate sales.
5. Mirrors
Just like picture frames, mirrors can also be easily painted. All you need to do is cover up the mirror part very well so none of the black paint gets on the reflective glass. But on the bright side, mirrors aren’t always super expensive. You can find some pretty gorgeous mirrors, like this one, for cheap.
6. Throw blankets
Unfortunately, like many others on the list, we can’t just use whatever color we want and spray paint it black. But there are still plenty of good, cheap options that you can choose from to keep with your black and brown color scheme.
When looking into a throw blanket, try to get some sort of pattern or design on it as well. For example, this blanket is a great option that doesn’t break the bank yet looks super cozy and chic. Just remember to check how to wash it! A lot of cheaper blankets will lose their softness if you don’t take care of them properly and don’t wash them on the right setting.
7. Pillows
Speaking of something cozy yet cheap that you should add to your living room couch, pillows are a must-have to couple with your throw blanket. One of the cheaper ways to go about it is to buy some cheaper pillow inserts and then buy pillow covers.
That way you can always change them out for the season, or if you find yourself wanting to refresh your color scheme again. Additionally, just like with throw blankets, you should get a pillow case with some texture, whether it be satin or something plush, it will instantly upgrade your space. Just remember that certain pillow covers may be harder to wash than others.
8. Candles
Another great way to add some cozy yet cheap decor to your black and brown living room is by adding the ultimate cozy decor piece: candles. Unlike a lot of items on the list, candle containers can be reused over and over again, but this is also an item that you can easily spray paint as well. If you find a stunning candle and you want to reuse the jar, you can use the freeze method.
This is where you place the jar in the freezer to make the wax brittle and then pop it out or use a spoon. If you need one in the first place, you can always find a gorgeous one online or you can wait until Bath & Body Works has their annual sale and grab one there!
