Some of us are so wrapped up in the Halloween and Christmas seasons, we forget there’s still another holiday that we can decorate our home for: Thanksgiving!
Even though it’s heavily fall-influenced decor, we can still add in a few touches of Thanksgiving-specific decor. From small little turkeys to a larger cornucopia of goods, there are plenty of ways to make your home cozier while getting ready for the Thanksgiving season!
If you enjoy this blog post, then definitely take a look at this one as well, which is all about living room fall decorations!
This blog post is all about Thanksgiving home decorations.
Cozy Thanksgiving Home Decorations
1. Chunky knit blanket
Nothing says cozy like a chunky knit blanket that you can wrap yourself in on a chilly November night. One of the best ways to make your home feel more inviting and warm is to add a chunky knit blanket in a gorgeous fall color, like orange, rust, or a dark olive.
Even though knit blankets are gorgeous, if you’re prone to spills in your house, I would opt for a throw blanket instead. Knit blankets, especially delicate knit blankets can be time-intense and a little annoying to properly wash.
2. Plaid or flannel pillows
If you want something that will perfectly pair with your cozy blanket, then grab a few pillows to balance it out. If you want to add Thanksgiving vibes to them, there are so many cute options. It is pretty easy to get into the Christmas area when looking at plaid, so you should stick with specific colors, like oranges and browns. For example, a nice orange knit blanket and some orange and plaid pillows would be ideal.
3. Layered rugs
Depending on your own personal style, you could go with a layered rugs look. if you’re not sure what this entails, it’s basically exactly what it says. This really gives cozy vibes, especially with the combination of softness and texture it provides.
A good option is starting with a more neutral tone for the first rug and then put another smaller rug that has a little bit of texture or pattern over top of it. Here’s a great article for how to layer your rugs. But this style of overlapping rugs is definitely not everyone’s favorite. If you’re not a fan, you can also stick with adding a carpet that’s either Thanksgiving-related colors, maybe even a Persian rug if it fits with your color scheme.
4. Candles
You really can’t talk about cozy decor without at least mentioning candles. Candles are one of the most popular items that you will see when you scroll through pictures or videos of relaxing or or comforting scenes. There’s just something about the soft flicker of a candle that puts your mind at ease. Depending on your own home, real candles may not be the safest option, but you can still get that calming effect with a flameless candle as well.
5. Scents
When you think of Thanksgiving, one of the best aspects of it is all the amazing smells you get from delicious food being cooked. Even though you can’t cook like Thanksgiving Day every day, you could add some similar scents in your house to give the same vibes for longer than just a day.
You could choose real candles, diffusers, or wax melts, or more. There are endless options for you to choose from, but when it comes to scents, go for your favorite scent, whether it be cinnamon pumpkin or a warm vanilla.
6. Warm lighting
Another way to add some Thanksgiving decor to your home is by adding warm lighting. Adding warm lighting can be one of the easiest things to do to your home to add the perfect amount of coziness that you’re looking for. If candles really aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other options.
Before you change anything, though, the general idea around this is to keep the lighting low and soft. You could start by changing out your lightbulbs to soft white or amber-toned bulbs (around 2700K to 3000K). If you don’t want to do that, you could easily drape some string lights over your mantle or window or add some fairy lights to a clear container.
7. Wheat and dried grasses bundles
If you’re a plant person, then this is definitely a great decor option for you. Another way to bring Thanksgiving into your home decor is by adding bundles of wheat or dried grasses. I know it sounds a little weird, but take a look! It really gives off that harvest vibe.
There’s plenty of different dried botanicals that you could reach for, but wheat bundles and dried grasses are two of the most popular. Either one would look great in your favorite vase or container.
8. Pumpkins and more gourdsĀ
Another great fall item that will make your home ready for Thanksgiving is a gourd! Even though pumpkins are a type of gourd, I usually separate it from the rest because of how popular they are. Although pumpkins are perfect for the entire fall season, the best way to differentiate your Halloween pumpkin decor and your Thanksgiving pumpkin decor is color!
For your Thanksgiving pumpkins and gourds, I would stick with more neutral colors, such as your beiges and browns. And these are really such versatile pieces as you can arrange a small group of them anywhere they could fit – your countertop, a side table, or even as part of your table centerpiece.
9. Apples and pears
If we’re sticking with food products, then apples and pears are another great option for Thanksgiving home decor. You can grab some real ones (maybe during your apple-picking trip) or some fake fruit work just as well.
Adding them in a gorgeous, decorative bowl is a very easy decor piece that you can also add to different parts of your home. Just be careful if you have real fruit on a coffee table or it might become your pet’s next snack.
10. Eucalyptus
If wheat and dried grasses aren’t really your thing, but you’re still a plant person, eucalyptus might be a great option for you for your Thanksgiving decor. You can put it in a nice vase or container on your side table or countertop or you could buy a eucalyptus bundle and drape it over your mantle.
Heck, if it’s real eucalyptus, you could even put any extra in your bathroom to upgrade your shower! Just remember that eucalyptus is toxic for pets, so opt for the fake stuff if you have some furry friends.
11. Leaves
This might sound silly, but leaves are perfect decor items for Thanksgiving. What else gives you those perfect fall vibes than some nice crunchy leaves? You can absolutely buy some fake leaves, but if you’re really looking to cut your budget, then take some leaves from outside! You just need to prep them properly.
The best leaves to preserve are magnolia leaves. You need to collect them when they’re dry and wipe them clean. Mix 1 part glycerin and 2 parts hot water and submerge the leaves for 3-5 days. Pat dry and you will be good to go!
12. Table runner or tablecloth
One of the most important parts of Thanksgiving decor is arguable what kind of items you’re putting on or around the table. Of course, we don’t want to overdo it, but it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t add something to the table. If you’re looking to go a little more simple, you should go with a table runner.
It can be something light that goes with all your other decor. Another good idea is a nice combination of both a table runner and a tablecloth. You could add a neutral tablecloth underneath, maybe an off-white, with a more colorful table runner over top.
13. Cornucopias
Another gorgeous idea for Thanksgiving decor is one of the most symbolic items of the holiday: the cornucopia. Even if you think you don’t know what it is, you probably do! You just need a quick Google search. This is a pretty fun idea that you can get super creative with or you can DIY.
You can get super fancy with it and add all kinds of fruits, gourds, grasses, and wheat it can handle, or you can do a more simplified version. It’s completely up to you and whatever fits your vibe. There’s really no *wrong* item you can fit into it. It serves as the perfect table centerpiece or even something you can place on another countertop.
14. Centerpieces
Speaking of centerpieces, let’s talk about how gorgeous Thanksgiving-centered centerpieces can be. There are all kinds, of course. You can DIY with a combination of the decor mentioned above or you can easily buy one that’s already put together.
When it comes to these centerpieces, you need to think more earthy, so a combination of candles, leaves, and gourds would be perfect. One of my favorites that I’ve seen recently is using a clear container and filling it with tiny pumpkins and adding some wheat grass at the top.
15. Display what you’re grateful for
This is my absolute favorite Thanksgiving decor piece: pictures of family, friends, and whatever else you’re grateful for. Maybe your family isn’t the sappiest like mine, but one of our favorite ways to decorate for Thanksgiving is add framed photos of everything we’re grateful for to the centerpiece of our table.
We still keep the earthy feel with all the different gourds and leaves, but instead of wrapping them around candles or other items, we make the photos of our family, friends, pets, lost loved ones, and even favorite places, the focal point of our table. It’s not the most aesthetic, but it’s something we look forward to doing every year!
