This blog post is all about organization hacks.
Ingenious Organization Hacks
1. Get rid of what you don’t use
One of the most important hacks, but also one of the most tedious ones is getting rid of what you don’t use, wear, or need anymore. You would be shocked at how much space this would clear up throughout your house. This doesn’t mean that you have to do this all at once, but slowly go through your home, room by room, and sort things into two categories: donate or throw away. You could even do one room a month. Remember, organization is not just a phase or something that’s temporary, it’s a lifestyle!

2. Use open shelves
Open shelves are the best shelves to use when organizing your home because you want to be able to see what’s on them. This helps you not misplace or forget any of your items that you place on them. This can be a huge problem because many people don’t even realize how many items they still have that they don’t even know they have. You don’t have to pay that much money for some open shelves, you can easily get a cheap yet sturdy version on Amazon or your local home goods store.
3. Use stackable containers
There are endless places you can use stackable containers, but it’s important to note that they should also be clear and labeled. Stackable containers are super helpful because they very easily stack on top of each other, making sure that you’re utilizing all the space that you’re given. If they’re clear, it also allows you to keep track of what’s inside of them. Unfortunately, even though some containers are “clear”, they’re still a little opaque sometimes. This is where you would use labels with a list of what’s inside the container as well.
4. Label everything
Speaking of labels, when you’re organizing your house, this is such a huge hack. A lot of people swear that they will just remember what’s in every container or box. I promise that you will forget what’s in that one random box at the top of your closet. Be sure to add a label to any box that you can’t clearly see through or any folder that you keep, as well as a list of what’s in there.
5. Use hooks
This is a better hack than most people think. You can always use an extra hook or more in your home, especially if you have a larger family. I can’t emphasize how helpful they would be in any room of your house. In your kitchen, you can use it for a decor piece or even a book bag or purse. If you add them in your entryway, it would be the perfect spot to hang any coats. Additionally, in the bedroom, an extra hook could be used for almost anything. With their endless uses, extra hooks are always a good idea.
6. Use a binder for important documents
This is one of the most important hacks that you need to start doing. Look for all of your personal and private information. This includes your birth certificate, your insurance cards, your passport, etc. These all need to be kept in a safe area in your house with labels. You don’t need an expensive, fancy binder to start doing this, you can even use some manila envelopes at first if that’s what you have. For an example, the list of documents and information that I keep together in my binder is the following:
- Car title(s) & registration(s)
- Documents related to your mortgage or rent agreement
- Medical documents, especially if you’re chronically ill
- Legal documents, especially if you have ongoing lawsuits
- Passwords to important websites (like online banking and bills)
- Passports
- Social security cards
- Birth certificates
- Insurance cards
- Tax documents
7. Use a calendar
If you’ve never used a calendar, I promise this is a life-changing hack. Choose what works best for you – paper, dry erase board, etc. If you’re not much of a calendar person in the first place, I would honestly put it somewhere that you would see it constantly so it reminds you to actually use it. If you have multiple people in your family, I would use a different color for each member of your family. Some people try to use different calendars for different members of their family, like their kids’ routines, but that can also get super overwhelming and allow you to forget or miss something.
8. Write a daily to-do list
This is the same vein as the calendar. If you have never used a to-do list before, then be prepared to get your mind blown. When you have busy schedules, sometimes you forget the day-to-day things that you need to do. Just because you have a calendar with all the larger events that you need to do and places you need to be, it doesn’t mean that you won’t forget about the smaller things. A lot of people say that they can’t carry around a list with them all day or they will forget what they have stored on their phones. Well, my response is that one of my favorite hacks is actually taking a picture of your daily to-do list and making it the background screen of your phone. I bet you’ll remember to check that one!
9. Set your entryway up for success
When I say set up your entryway for success, I mean that you need to have some sort of organization piece right when you walk in the door to help lower the amount of clutter that typically lives there. What do you do when you first walk in the door? You take off your shoes, your coat, your purse, etc. In order for those things to not become clutter, make sure you have some sort of shoe organizer or a coat rack. Although these are simple tips, you would be surprised with how many people don’t do this.
10. Everything in your house should have a place
This reminds me of one of my favorite sayings when it comes to organization: “Don’t put it down, put it away.” When trying to keep your home as organized as possible, everything in your house should have its own place. For example, if you have a room that has a lot of extra clutter, make sure that all of that actually belongs in there. Ask yourself if it really should be in that room, or does it have another “place” in your house? Does it need to be in the catch-all bin, or does it actually belong in the trash? Be more mindful of what’s in each room of your house and whether or not you need to find it its own place.
11. Utilize most of the space in your house
This can be controversial because some people really like that minimalist vibe because it makes your house feel bigger than it is. Don’t get me wrong, I agree. But if you’re someone that has a home that tends to get pretty cluttered, I don’t think you have that luxury, especially if you have kids. If you have a decently sized empty space in a room, say, your living room, then maybe you should add a functional decor piece instead of just leaving it blank. Because, unfortunately, clutter will find that space instead.
12. Add a catch-all storage piece in each room
This is a great organization hack because it’s a lazy organization hack. You don’t have to put much thought into this and it works – and works well. A catch-all storage piece is usually a super cute basket or small storage container that you can easily fit into almost any room. These are especially great if you have kids or pets – or both! A catch-all storage piece is a great hack that can live in all of the rooms of your house while also adding a cute decor piece.
13. Add trash cans in each room
Now that you’ve added a catch-all storage piece in each room, now you need to add a trash can in each room. This may not be the easiest thing to do, especially when it comes to cleaning, but this will make your life a lot easier. How many times have you ended up with some trash that you didn’t feel like throwing away and promised you would later? I’m sure plenty of times! The trash cans don’t even have to be big and fancy, even a small one does the job. This will keep your rooms a lot cleaner and, therefore, a lot more organized.
14. Make your bed
Now this is one hack that seems a little silly, but people swear on it. Just making your bed in the morning gives you that sense of productivity when you need it in the morning right when you wake up. This is a great way to set the mood for your morning and even your whole day. Being organized in that one small space in your life will push you to continue that organization throughout your house.
15. Schedule time to organize or declutter at least monthly
Unfortunately, staying organized is not just a one-time thing, it’s a lifestyle. In order to stay organized, the best way is to keep up with scheduling small organization or declutter sessions at least once a month. The more often you declutter, the quicker it will take! I know a lot of women that wait until their kids are asleep or they wake up in the morning to do a little “reset”. If you’re on a TikTok, you know exactly what I’m talking about, and this is a great way to go about it.
